Current ISA Rules
When you buy an ISA like a PEP in the past, it is not a product in itself, but a tax efficient wrapper around an allowable annual investment. What your money is buying is the underlying investment, such as units in a unit trust or shares in a company. An ISA investment is free of all income or capital gains.
There are two types of ISA that you can purchase. A Mini ISA and Maxi ISA and you are only allowed to hold one type in each tax year.
It is important to remember that if you put just £1 inside a Mini ISA you will not be permitted to open a Maxi ISA in that same tax year and vice versa.
| Investment Type | Mini ISA | Maxi ISA |
| Cash | £3,000 | £3,000 |
| Stocks & Shares | £4,000 | Balance to £7,000 |
| Totals | £7,000 | £7,000 |
“Many Maxi ISA providers only offer the stocks and shares element without a cash function. For clients wishing to hold cash and stocks within their ISA, a Mini ISA will offer a greater number of options.
